The Luxury Collection

The Luxury Collection traces its heritage to Compagnia Italiana Grandi Alberghi (CIGA), founded in 1906, owner of some of Italy’s most renowned luxury hotels, including the Hotel Danieli in Venice. In 1985, Prince Karim Aga Khan acquired a controlling interest in CIGA and began to expand the company’s luxury hotel portfolio beyond Italy, most notably with purchases in Spain and Austria. CIGA later expanded in geographic focus to include legendary properties in Sardinia, including Hotel Cala di Volpe, Hotel Pitrizza and Hotel Romazzino. In 1994, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. acquired CIGA and created The Luxury Collection designed to be the world’s most renowned assemblage of hotels and resorts. Today, The Luxury Collection is a brand of Marriott International, Inc.
